Epidemiologist

Fixed term full time position until 30/06/2026.
HS4-HS5 depending on experience $42.33 per hour to $46.99 per hour

Grampians Public Health Unit is seeking an Epidemiologist to join our Public Health Unit in Ballarat. In this role, you'll conduct sophisticated data analysis, develop visualisation tools, support disease surveillance, and translate complex information into actionable insights that drive evidence-based decision-making.

 

About the Role
The Epidemiologist supports the Grampians Public Health Unit (GPHU) by leading data-driven public health activities including disease surveillance, health protection, population health monitoring, and strategic planning. This role ensures complex epidemiological data is translated into clear insights that guide evidence-based public health decisions, with a focus on vulnerable populations and reducing health inequities.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct communicable disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and cluster analysis

  • Analyse non-communicable disease trends, health inequalities, and emerging regional health issues

  • Support population health planning through demographic forecasting and data modelling

  • Develop datasets, dashboards, and visualisations to support operational and strategic priorities

  • Translate epidemiological insights into clear reports, visual formats, and presentations

  • Deliver staff training on data methodologies and contribute to regional public health education

  • Design and maintain evaluation frameworks, data governance systems, and quality assurance processes

  • Collaborate with local, state and national partners to ensure consistency and integration of health data

  • Support research, quality improvement, and committee engagement as required

 

Skills & Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in epidemiology, biostatistics or a related field (public health qualifications desirable)

  • Experience analysing large datasets in health, emergency response or public health settings

  • Proficiency in statistical and data tools (e.g., R, SQL, STATA, Tableau, PowerBI, Excel)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of communicable disease surveillance and population health analytics

  • Strong ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and engaging a variety of stakeholders

  • Desirable: experience with REDcap, hospital data, and knowledge of GPHU catchment health priorities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to data quality and governance
