Grampians Health offers acute care services in Ballarat and Horsham, along with subacute care throughout its network. The Queen Elizabeth Centre in Ballarat has 20 GEM beds, 4 TCP beds, 30 Rehab beds, 11 Palliative Care beds, and up to 12 GEM at Home beds. The Stawell facility has 16 mixed acute & subacute care beds, while the Horsham facility has 20 beds, including 10 GEM, 6 Rehab, and 4 TCP beds.
The Ballarat campus serves as a significant training site for the University of Melbourne and Deakin Rural Clinical Schools. The senior staff at this campus are deeply committed to the education and professional growth of medical students, Interns, HMOs, and Registrars.
Position Overview: Advanced Trainee in Geriatric Medicine
This position is specifically designed for physician trainees who are either planning to embark on or are currently undertaking advanced training in Geriatric Medicine.
As an Advanced Trainee in Geriatric Medicine at Grampians Health, you will play a crucial role within our team, benefiting from the mentorship of experienced geriatricians. The role is inherently flexible, catering to the distinct educational needs of the trainee and the dynamic requirements of our service. Our goal is to provide a tailored experience that enhances your ongoing education and facilitates your transition to a consultant role.

As an Advanced Trainee, you will gain substantial clinical exposure, enhance your patient care capabilities, and participate in a range of educational and training activities. Your involvement is intended to expand your knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes in the practice of Geriatric Medicine.
The Advanced Trainee role may involve providing geriatric expertise in various settings:
- Hospital: This includes acute and subacute care, with responsibilities ranging from consultative and shared care to primary care. It also involves supervising and coordinating patient care within the subacute wards and teams.
- Community: This covers admitted services such as Hospital in the Home and GEM at Home, as well as non-admitted services like the Hospital Admission Risk Program, Residential In-Reach, and the Transition Care Program.
- Ambulatory: This pertains to complex and specialist geriatric medicine clinics, which could be conducted in-person in a clinic, through home visits, or via remote telehealth.
Advanced Trainees are allocated protected training time to attend and contribute to the Victorian Geriatric Medicine Training Program. They have minimal on-call and after-hours commitments and are supported in refining their research skills.
As a member of the Geriatric Medicine team, the Advanced Trainee is expected to contribute to the team’s overall performance, aligning with the Mission, Vision, and Objectives of Grampians Health.
Essential Qualifications and Proficiencies
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA) is mandatory.
- The candidate should be registered for Advanced Training in Geriatric Medicine with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
- The applicant must demonstrate an appropriate level of experience, knowledge, skills, and aptitude in the clinical practice of medicine.
